In the world’s northernmost large city (or the largest northern city in the world), sits what was once the world’s largest shopping mall (until Dubai came along and took the prize). The West Edmonton Mall, in Edmonton, Alberta, is no longer the largest shopping center in the world but it does proudly retain the title of largest in North America!
The mall covers more than 6.1 million square feet (570,000 square meters) and is filled with more than 800 stores, 100 restaurants and food venues, an amusement park, a water park, a wave pool, mini golf, IMAX theatres, a zoo and several themed sections including an old Europe and a Chinatown! The mall is so huge that it takes several days just to see everything inside! More than 20,000 people work at the mall and it has the third largest parkade in North America, with spaces for 23,000 vehicles!
Edmonton is a city known for it’s pioneering ways, entrepreneurship, creativity, festivals and love for all four seasons of weather. However, after several months of bitter winter Edmontonians just want to escape. They can do this in WEM! Sitting on a tropical white sand beach is no problem, especially when a giant domed window above is covered with snow!
